Jarrow has a population of 27,526. From the middle of the 19th century until 1935 Jarrow was a centre for shipbuilding. It was also the starting point of the Jarrow March against unemployment in 1936.
Jarrow is the south-side home of the Tyne tunnels (two vehicular tunnels, a pedestrian and a cycle tunnel). The second Tyne Tunnel 2 was officially opened in July 2012. You can see some news footage of the event here...
