Gateshead's Metrocentre shopping centre is the largest shopping centre in Europe with 1.9 million square feet of retail, catering and leisure space.

The Metrocentre is open seven days a week with late night shopping available from Monday to Saturday. The normal Metrocentre opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am until 9pm; Saturday 9am until 7pm; Sunday 11am until 5pm. On bank holidays the Metrocentre is open from 10am until 6pm. Restaurants and leisure outlets are open later.

If you are travelling to the Metrocentre by car from South Shields the journey takes 25 minutes - take the A194 road until you reach the A1. Merge onto the A1 and after two miles get into the left lane marked Metro Centre. You then join the one-way ring road that circles the Metrocentre and it's four free car parks - if you have a particular retail outlet destination in the Metrocentre we would advise you to choose the car park colour that corresponds to the colour of the mall of your destination as the centre is quite sprawling and if you're carrying heavy shopping it is recommended to choose the closest car park.
