The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is fully equipped with 26 wards and a fully functioning accident and emergency unit. The hospital is part of the Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust or QE Gateshead. The hospital aims to provide excellent general health services to local residents but also provides a variety of key specialist areas such as Gynaecology, Maternity, Palliative Care and Old Age Psychiatry.

For staff and visitors to the hospital there is a dining hall (Quenellies) which is open from 8.30am until 2pm Monday to Friday. There is also a coffee lounge which provides beverages, sandwiches and hot and cold snacks.

Level Two

Blue zone - ambulatory care (ward 2), emergency care, shops, Wards 1 and 2.

Orange zone - cashiers office, endoscopy, fracture clinic, medical records, outpatients, PALS (patient liaison service), pharmacy, radiology (x-ray and CT scanning), security, ultrasound, urology, WRVS shop.

Red zone - bowel screening.

Purple zone - bereavement service (Swan centre), breast screening, chapel, clinical skills, colonoscopy, ear nose & throat, gymnasium, hearing aid clinic, Macmillian nurses (Swan centre), MRI scanner, occupational health (Swan centre), orthotics, physiotherapy, restaurant, staff library, Swan centre, ward 3 (short stay ward), ward 4.

Level Three

Blue zone - accident & emergency, emergency care.

Orange zone - cardiac diagnostics, carido catheter lab, endoscopy, fracture clinic, medical physics, outpatients, radiology (x-ray and CT scanning), theatres, WRVS shop, x-ray.

Red zone - cardiology (ward 8), chemotherapy (ward 10), critical care, PIU (procedure investigation unit), ward 9, wards 11 & 12, wards 14 & 14A.

Yellow zone - surgery centre, coffee shop, wards 26 & 27.

Green zone - chapel of rest, mortuary, day hospital, discharge lounge, fertility unit, ward 21, ward 22, ward 23, ward 25.
