From 25th January 2015 the #35 bus service to/from Sunderland and South Shields has been replaced by the new Sunderland to South Shields #20 Bus Service. |
Important update: From 25th January 2015, the 35 Laser bus service will be replaced with new services 35, 35A and 36. New service 35 will operate as the current 35 between Low Moorsley, Houghton-le-Spring, Newbottle, East Herrington, Durham Road, Sunderland Royal Hospital and Chester Road to Sunderland Interchange. Instead of operating to South Shields, it will then operate to Boldon Cinema via Southwick, Hylton Riverside, Castletown, and Town End Farm to replace service 29.
Service 35A will operate every 30 minutes between Heworth and Houghton-le-Spring. From Houghton-le-Spring, one journey per hour will continue to Low Moorsley. The other journey will operate to South Hetton as service X35. Service 36 will operate from Chester le Street via Fence Houses to Houghton-le-Spring, replacing service 71. The 36 will then follow the same route as service 35 through Newbottle, East Herrington, Durham Road, Sunderland Royal Hospital and Chester Road to Sunderland Interchange. From Sunderland Interchange northbound it will follow a similar route to service 35, operating via Southwick, Hylton Riverside and Castletown, but terminating at Town End Farm. Laser 35 buses run every 10 minutes between South Shields, Sunderland, Sunderland Royal Hospital and Houghton-le-Spring on Monday to Saturday daytimes. Buses will then run to Rainton Bridge, offering a more frequent ten-minute all-day service to the business park and a new direct link with Sunderland City Centre.

From 25th January 2015 the Prince Bishops 20/20A/X20 is the best service to use as it will be extended from Sunderland to South Shields via Cleadon. This replaces Laser services 35/35A/35B/35C on this section of route. This extension creates new cross-City connections. The frequency will remain at every 10 minutes during the day on Mondays to Saturdays, every 20 minutes on Sundays and 30 minutes during the evening. The revised service will have additional time at each end of its route to recover from any delays caused by traffic congestion, which means reliability of the service will improve. The route of services between Durham and Sunderland and between Sunderland and South Shields is unchanged, and the service will continue to use stand N towards Durham and stand Q towards South Shields in Park Lane.
